The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Feedback
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full text from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a sharper identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our audience.
The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following several months of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to continue witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
The President
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Face the competition with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that shift every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
The game lacks an announced release date or supported systems, but players can look forward to further news as production progresses.
