Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
