Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
